We’re 99% sure you’re referring to a little thing called weep holes here.
Weep holes are done intentionally by your bricklayer for two very important reasons:
- They ventilate the internal wall cavity and prevent mildew, dry rot, and damp. Yuck.
- They provide drainage. Bricks and mortar are porous and absorb water that can seep through and run down the backside of the bricks. If the water can’t drain, it could puddle inside the wall and damage the home’s structure. Big yuck.
