Good for you – you’re asking probably the most important question of all. Finding the right builder is everything. It’s the difference between a remarkable building experience, and one that is, well… something less than remarkable. To help you sort the reputable (like us) from the not so reputable (whom we can’t name for legal reasons – sorry!) there are a few things you can do.
Start by combing through each builder’s digital footprint to see what their clients are saying about them. Search their website, Facebook page and review sites like Product Review. Try ordering the reviews from Newest to Oldest as a lot can change over time, and keep an eye out for any common threads like build times, communication or lack thereof, and costs. Think about:
- What are their build times like? Have they blown out?
- What’s their communication like? Are clients constantly updated and kept in the loop, or left wondering what’s going on?
- Do they hit clients up for extra costs on site? (This one is more common than you’d think and sometimes unavoidable due to material costs skyrocketing in recent months).
You can also try reaching out to a few clients directly, Instagram is a great place for this, to see how their builds are progressing, particularly during a building boom.
Next, ensure they have all the necessary industry associations, both HIA (Housing Industry Association) and MBA (Master Builder Association).
