This is usually the bit that comes with a catch, right? You’ve got to earn more than, or less than, or be able to do a handstand bend back double flip (we never mastered that one either). Not this time. This time, the criteria’s pretty cruisey. It’s like they actually want to give you the money.
Simple enough? We think so. Just follow the rules, and the $15K could be yours.
There are a couple of eligibility variations depending on which state you’re applying for the First Home Owner Grant (FHOG) in – but don’t worry, it’s mostly good news.
In South Australia, the FHOG is a generous $15,000, and they’ve also scrapped stamp duty for first home buyers purchasing or building a new home. Looks like it’s a great time to build in Adelaide.
In the ACT, the FHOG has been replaced by the Home Buyer Concession Scheme, which reduces or removes stamp duty for eligible buyers, depending on income and household circumstances. So there’s still help on offer – even for existing homes.
In Queensland, the grant has been boosted to $30,000 for contracts signed before 30 June 2025 – a serious leg-up for first-time builders.
In Tasmania, the FHOG is currently $10,000 for building or buying a new home. Plus, first home buyers can get a stamp duty exemption on established homes valued up to $750,000, offering flexibility no matter which path you take.
NSW, Victoria and WA each offer $10,000 towards new builds, but eligibility rules (like property value caps) vary by state – so it pays to check the fine print.
Wherever you’re buying, there’s never been a better time to turn “first home buyer” into your new title.
All it takes is a few simple clicks. And the best part? You can even get someone else to do the clicking for you – specifically, the bank or financial institution that’s lending you the cash.
In Western Australia, you can apply for the First Home Owner Grant through the online FHOG portal, or your lender can submit it on your behalf if they’re an approved agent. The WA government website is also a handy place to find all the details.
In South Australia, it’s pretty common for your bank or credit union to handle the FHOG application for you. But if your lender isn’t an approved agent, you can apply directly through RevenueSA Online.
And this time it’s nothing to do with the bank of mum and dad; it’s the government’s First Home Owner Grant. All designed to help young renters like you get into a home of your own. Now that’s something that gets our vote.
Being a first home owner is remarkable in itself. But it also comes with a completely catch-free, no strings attached, never ever have to pay back, $15,000 cheque. Just for being you.
